Hormonal changes are not necessarily the main reason for weight gain in menopausal women. While hormonal factors do play role in weight gain, lifestyle is another important aspect that affects the weight changes.

In order to be healthy and maintain an ideal weight during the menopause it is necessary to adapt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

From the years of observation I noticed that the reason of weight gain in menopausal women is a lifestyle change: they exercise less however they consume the same amount of calories.

The problem is that weight gain is not only an esthetic issue, it can cause lots of health problems. For example, women who gain about 20 pounds after menopause are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Other weight gain health-related problems are diabetes, joints and knees problems, lower back problems, heart and lung problems.

If you didn't pay much attention to your diet and exercise regime during the early years of your life, note that it is of tremendous importance to do so now.

Here are some simple guidelines:

1. Pay attention where your calories come from: are they from red meat or from carrots? This will make a huge difference in a way you look and feel. Choosing the right foods is a contributing factor to weight loss and better health. Make healthier choices and you will lose weight.

2. Exercise is extremely important, especially as we age. Make sure you do weight training, aerobic activity and stretching. This can be achieved through resistance training, aquafit classes, weight lifting, running, walking or aerobics classes, stretching classes, Pilates or yoga. There are many activities to chose from that incorporate all the important exercise components. They will help you to be fit, lose weight and be healthy.
