Are They Killing Your Kids? A recent announcement made by a representative of the UK's 2,500 school nurses, has called for schools to help in their fight against Child Obesity. Ros Godson, from the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association (CPHVA), advises every school to have their own equipment for weighing and measuring overweight children in an effort to keep abreast of the problem of child obesity. Research, carried out in 2005 to help ministers understand the scale of the problem, warned half the population will be obese within 25 years if current trends continue. It's Not Enough to Halt Child Obesity Weighing and measuring children at school will not solve the growing child obesity problem. Ministers are already aware that child obesity exists and it needs addressing in practical terms. So here we are, four years after the research carried out in 2005 and child obesity is still escalating. So What’s the Answer to Child Obesity? Instead of weighing and measuring children at school, authorities should concentrate on educating both children and their families about child obesity. They should be showing them how to improve their diets by promoting healthy eating for kids as well as encouraging children to take more exercise. But more importantly, steps should be taken to prevent food manufacturers from targeting children and promoting unhealthy food directly to them. Food manufacturers must be made to take more responsibility in their role of encouraging child obesity.
